This Film begin with a man telling a story to his passenger. Their brakes go out and they begin careening across fields. They come back on the road behind two motorcycles and come upon a town. The town believes that they are royalty, so when the royalty actually arrives, the guests are disappointed at the reception. At a nearby house, Guido introduces himself as Prince Guido and tells the young girl a great story. A woman, whom he begins to call "princess," falls out of the top of the barn, and he catches her on top of the hay. She was stung by a wasp, and he begins to suck poison out of her leg. She assures him that she's okay and introduces herself as Dora.
Guido Orefice is a sweet, goofy man who is always telling stories. Guido has a variety of different jobs, but his dream is to open his own bookshop. When we first meet Guido he is riding with one of his friends, and he meets the beautiful young Dora. For many months, Guido runs into Dora at the oddest times, and they begin to fall in love. He finally sweeps her off her feet at her engagement party.
Guido and Dora lead a happy life with their son, Giosuy. However, one year on Giosuy's birthday, he and Guido are dragged from their home and sent to a concentration camp. When Dora arrives back at the house, she discovers their disappearance, goes to the train station, and demands to be allowed to follow her family. Guido and Dora never see one another again though he keeps romancing her, Guido's love keeps Giosuy alive through the harsh truths of the concentration camp. As always, Guido makes everything into a story and a game so that the little boy will remain hidden throughout their time there. Even when all the other children are murdered, Guido's stories convince Giosuy to remain hidden from the soldiers. Giosuy's desire for his very own tank keeps him focused on winning the game that Guido has created.
Before the film comes into an end, Guido died because of sacrificing his life to the future of his family. Giosuy went out from the small box after all the people in the concentration evacuated and that is what exactly Guido told him before he died. A huge American tank appears in the concentration camp and Giosuy saw it and the small boy believed that all the story that his father told him is actually true. The American soldier took Giusoy in the tank and they ride until Giusoy saw his Mama Dora and the film totally ended here.
The Director, Roberto Benigni, was able to present the viewers a light way of seeing through the historical event of holocaust and I can also say that he presented it fairly that upon watching the film it did not dwell so much on how the mass killing and other unfair treatments that happened during the holocaust. The film focused more on the simplicity of life amidst all the hard times that was brought by the war and how the story is even more interesting upon watching. The film is slanted not only to those nations who have been affected by the World War II but also to the film and historical buffs who wanted to take a closer look of what might have been the Jews’ situations during the war.
One of the film’s strength is the way the director sets a light/comedic mood on the story knowing that it was set during the World War II. Although it is not based on a real story, viewers can easily relate to this film for it also focused on the love between Guido and Dora. The beauty and simplicity of life was very abundant with these people from the moment Guido and Dora met and fell in love to having their own family and finally to a tragic end. It also wants to impart to the viewers how a family would unconditionally sacrifice their life for another. It is indeed a very inspirational film.
The weakness would have to be the language barrier that this Italian film would might not catch the attention of every film goer. Then again, the story is quite predictable because it is obviously set during the World War II that goes with a tragic end. The viewer may also get bored if he is not a real film or historical buff.
As I saw the ending of the movie, I feel that that its not complete. There should be scene that will be put in the ending to make this film expand in the view of the audience and as an audience I don’t know what happened to story of Dora and her son after their met after the war. I think that there should be scene about the dead body of guido and what will happen to the life of Dora and especially to her son to make this film complete.
In the part of the film when Guido told Giosuy to hide in a box next to a wall. This box is shown several times during the film and becomes a symbol of being in hiding. The first time we see the box, it is simply focused on by the camera as everyone enters the concentration camp. Although we don't know it at the time, the box will eventually become a major symbol of the film. The concentration camp is a hidden place in Germany, and the rest of the world was also hiding from the reality of the war at the time.
The second time we see the box, Guido shows Giosuy that a young boy is hiding inside. Giosuy has stopped believing Guido's story that many other children are around the area hiding as well. When Guido notices a young German boy playing hide-and-seek with his friends, he quickly shows him to Giosuy. Little does Giosuy know that one day he will also hide in the box.
As I have eventually saw the plot of the movie, I eagerly liked it. The reason for this is that as a Filipino movie goer who choses to watch films that are either emotionally draining or comedy, everyone would really be pleased by this film that combines these two. Although it is a foreign film, I was easily attracted of how the story would run from the very beginning because I know from the start that I will learn something good with it. It has a tragic story but it did not fail to focus on the simple yet essential things in life which is life, love and family.

This will definitely relate to each and everyone who has watched the movie and could even be life changing. Unconditional sacrifice is greatly implied on the film that upon thinking of our family, it is very inevitable. On our everyday lives that we spend time with our family, I can attest that even with our simpliest joys or wants, we can easily sacrifice for their sake. Just like how our parents have raised us innocently, this film is at its best when it tried to focus on the good things amidst all the not so good things that adults face and young people don’t know yet. How our parents tried to preserve us with good morals and the beauty of life, this goes along on how we do not realize yet how much they have gone through to raise us and how we have to be grateful that there is no reason why we are here if they were not there for us right from the start.
